Are Same Day Crowns Worth the Rush?

Same day dental crowns can be a great option for patients who may live a hectic lifestyle and do not have the patience to commit to traditional dental crowns. A traditional dental crown procedure is time-consuming (generally takes two doctor visits plus a consultation) and can take a lot of dedication from the patient.

As the name suggests, a same day crown procedure is completed all within a day and is usually done within an hour or two at most. Same day crowns are used to correct long-term damage or repair emergency situations such as a broken tooth or sudden injury. A dental crown is basically a cap that fits over your tooth that reinforces the appearance and functionality of the tooth. Same day crowns use technology to produce a convenient and durable alternative to the traditional crown.

Pros and cons

In addition to the time saved with a same day operation, many patients find a same day procedure much easier, and these crowns can look far more attractive than traditional crowns. Traditional crowns often have a fine black line that runs alongside the gum line. This is not true with a same day operation. Same day crowns are also cheaper than the traditional crowns but do have some aesthetic limitations as well.

Although cheaper, same day crowns are generally not molded as well as traditional crowns. Traditional crowns take a mold of the patient’s mouth during the consultation and send it off to a lab to ensure that the crown fits perfectly with the patient. Since the crown is produced within an hour or two, same day operations are generally less durable.

Color and physical appearance

Same day crowns also always have to be a single color. Since natural teeth are naturally different shades due to diet, staining and oral hygiene, same day crowns typically are a shade of yellow at the gum line and gradually change color. They peak at the top in translucency. Along with a mold, traditional crowns are crafted by laboratory technicians that use different shades of porcelain to create a personal crown that will match and blend in with the patient’s natural teeth.

Since optimal cosmetic appearance is one of the main goals behind a crown procedure, it is often suggested that traditional crowns be used for the front half of the patient’s mouth or in situations where the front teeth will be affected. Depending on the location or condition of the tooth, you may also want to go with the more traditional route. Regardless of the location or condition, a thorough exam and diagnosis from a medical professional will solve this instantly.

Verdict

If you are in a hurry and want a crown as soon as possible, look for a same day procedure. Traditional crowns are more costly and can take a while to get going. Same day procedures are done within an hour or two and can be cost-effective as well. However, if you MUST have the best cosmetic results, go with the traditional crowns.
